SEVERAL Indian groups have criticised Malaysian Hindu Sangam president Datuk R.S. Mohan Shan (pic) over his call to declare April 14 the Tamil New Year, reported Malaysia Nanban.

While some in the Tamil community considered the first day of the tai month, Ponggal, as the new year, others maintained that the first of the chittirai is the beginning of the Tamil calendar.

Mohan, along with others, purportedly issued a memorandum to the Government asking for chittirai 1, which falls on April 14 this year, to be declared the new year and for it to be gazetted as a public holiday.

However, many Tamil activists called on Mohan to immediately apologise and retract the memorandum, alleging there were wrong facts presented about the traditions of the Tamil community.
