2 women among 3 judges promoted to Federal Court, says source

PUTRAJAYA: Three Court of Appeal judges, including two women, are expected to be appointed to fill vacancies in the Federal Court, a source said.

They are Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Nallini Pathmanathan and Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim.

The source said their nominations were approved by the Conference of Rulers which held its meeting last week.

The three will assume office after receiving their letters of appointment from the king and take their judicial oaths before Chief Justice Richard Malanjum.

With the elevation of Tengku Maimun and Nallini, six of the 14 judges in the apex court will be women, the highest number ever in the apex court.

Currently, the women judges on the Federal Court are Zaharah Ibrahim, who is also the Chief Judge of Malaya, Aziah Ali, Alizatul Khair Osman Khairuddin and Rohana Yusuf.

The source said it was unclear whether another vacancy in the Federal Court had been filled.

According to procedure, the Judicial Appointments Commission, comprising five judges and four eminent persons, vets the candidates’ list.

Under Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong appoints judges acting on the advice of the prime minister and after consulting the Conference of Rulers.
